League Of Friends

League Of Friends

History:

The League of Friends was formed in 1978 as part of the survival campaign when the hospital was threatened with closure. It has become a well organised fund raising and support unit which, in addition to the work undertaken on its own behalf, co-ordinates the efforts of other many local groups who give valuable help to the hospital.

Maintaining a high standard of premises and equipment in the hospital is both important and expensive. By amassing the large number of indivdual contributions received, the League is able to fund major maintenance and development projects as well as replacing many smaller items of equipment.

The League single-handedly meets the full cost of staffing one of the hospital's beds throughout the whole year.

Organisation:

The League is run by a Management Committee which meets at the hospital on the first Wednesday of each month. Committee members and officers are elected at the Annual General Meeting, which is held at the hospital on the first Wednesday of November.

Current Acitivities:

Volunteers man the hospital's main reception desk with two shifts one 9am - 1pm and 1pm - 5pm, Monday to Friday.

  • Receptionists' duties include:
  • Greeting and asisting patients and visitors;
  • Answering the telephone and transferring incoming calls to the appropriate person; and
  • Undertaking a number of routine clerical and administrative jobs.

The hospital provides morning and afternoon drinks for inpatients - a task which is also performed by volunteers. This entails:

  • Provisioning and setting up the tea trolley;
  • Serving tea or coffee and biscuits to those patients who want them;
  • Collecting the used crockery; and Placing them in the dishwasher

The League of Friends Committee also organises a number of high-profile annual fundraising events, such as:

  • The Garden Party;
  • The Christmas Raffle;
  • A Float for the Tarporley Carnival; and
  • Provision of helpers for other fundraising efforts.
